Maitland Kennels is nestled in the charming hamlet of Benmiller, just outside of Goderich, Ontario where a welcoming sign claims Goderich to be the prettiest town in Canada.

Maitland Kennels has been producing quality Bernese Mountain Dogs since 1983. Six years in Switzerland and a love for dogs made the Bernese a natural choice.

From 1987 until recently we raised Australian Cattle Dogs as well. It soon became apparent, in 1998, that the Australian Kelpie was more suited to our needs on the farm.

Maitland Kennels now concentrates on the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Australian Kelpie. We strive to produce dogs that are true examples of their breed standards in conformation and temperament alike. Health and longevity are taken very seriously in our breeding programs, therefore all dogs are routinely screened for health concerns within their breed. Bernese are either OVC or GDC cleared for hip and elbows, they are CERFed for eye problems and are heart tested as well, Kelpies are OVC cleared for hips and are CERFed for eye problems before entering our breeding programs.

It is of great pride to us that dogs from our kennel have temperaments that will allow them to socialize well with people of all ages, with other dogs and with other animals. They must be able to enjoy doing the job given to them, whether it be in the conformation show ring, in the herding trial arena, around the farm, in the obedience ring, the agility field, greeting the kids home from school or at the foot of their masters' bed.

Over the years Maitland Kennels and their dogs have had a great deal of success in the conformation show ring as well as in the herding trial arena. We've also enjoyed and been proud of the aid, pleasure and companionship our dogs have provided to our dog owners. We aim to continue with this, while constantly working to improve genetics, longevity and devotion.
