Cherrydale Farm is nestled in the hamlet of Benmiller in midwestern Ontario, close to Goderich on the coast of Lake Huron. We have been raising South African Dorpers for 6 years; we have both purebred Black Headed Dorpers and purebred White Headed Dorpers. The Black Headed flock originated from Quickheels Ranch in BC, the Quickheels flock has since migrated to Florida. The White Headed flock originated from embryos brought into our flock from South Africa from the Kasteel Stud. The CLRC now allows an upgrading program for the Dorper, this will help increase the gene pool as there have been little or no imports from South Africa in the last 4 years. I have been in sheep production for several years, trying various breeds, I have found the Doper to be the meatiest by far and with the best back end. They are low maintenance, hardy to all climates, pest resistant, have excellent mothering instincts and are easy lambers. They have twins on average with the occasional triplets being possible. Yearling ewes will generally have singletons and will almost certainly lamb by their first birthday. With proper flock management the Dorper will lamb 3 times in 2 years, as they are all season breeders. Adding a Dorper as a terminal sire to any flock will prove to be profitable. The increase in carcass quality will be visible immediately as well as the ease in management and care of flock. We keep a relatively small flock of about 30 sheep so that we may concentrate our efforts on producing quality breeding stock. We have made sales all across Canada and are willing to make sales of individuals or small flocks anywhere permitted. We welcome inquiries about the breed and about our farm. Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information. See the South African Dorpers |
